BORIVLI, JANUARY 25, 2012: The French philosopher, Voltaire said, "Appreciation is a wonderful thing: It makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well." These exact sentiments echoed the pride and pleasure that we Salesian Co-operators felt as we gathered in large numbers to felicitate three of our members Philomena D'Souza, Carmen Nunes and Angelo Nunes who completed more than twenty five years of active service with the Association of Salesian Co-operators.

Philo, Carmen and Angelo made their promise to be Salesian Co-operators in January 1984, that is, about twenty eight years back. Fr. Elias Dias was the local delegate of the Cooperators at that time. Since time, all three have been consistently very active and faithful to their commitment. They regularly attend meetings and participate in the activities conducted by the Association. Carmen and Angelo sit in the religious book stall every evening. You can count on them to be there every day, whatever the weather - be it rain, cold or shine. All three are very helpful, supportive, kind, generous and encouraging.

Completing more than twenty five years of active and faithful association with the Co-operators is an important milestone. Hence, to celebrate this achievement, the Co-operators decided to felicitate Philo, Carmen and Angelo in a special way on January 24, 2012. The date chosen had a special "Salesian Significance" the Feast of St Francis de Sales. The celebrations began with the 7.00 pm Eucharistic Celebration which was offered as a Thanksgiving Mass. Fr. Wilfred D'Souza, Provincial Delegate of the Salesian Family, Mumbai Province was the main celebrant at this Eucharist. Fr. Ronald Menezes, our parish priest, was the concelebrant.

After Mass, the Co-operators gathered in the Multi-purpose hall, waiting to greet the Guests of Honour. The jubilarians Angelo flanked by Carmen and Philo on either side entered the hall to the beat of music and enthusiastic applause of the Co-operators and occupied centre stage. Phyllis Lewis presented a bouquet to Fr. Wilfred, who then addressed the Co-operators. He lauded the Co-operators of our unit for being active and vibrant. He touched upon different aspects the duties of the council members to ease the pressure off the delegate, the spiritual formation and animations to be done at the monthly meetings, the Salesian Family Day and the Strenna for this year. Fr. Wilfred then presented the Silver Jubilarians with plaques and gifts.

The co-ordinator of our unit, Geeta Menezes, addressed the gathering and the power point presentation with various photographs featuring the three Silver Jubilarians elicited amusing response from the audience.

Everybody enjoyed the games and the fellowship meal that followed. The Co-operators coming together in such large numbers and participating in the celebrations showed solidarity and affection for Philo, Carmen and Angelo. All in all, it was an evening of joie de vivre and camaraderie!

SALESIAN FAMILY DAY - 2012

MATUNGA, JANUARY19, 2012: January 15, 2012 was a day of great celebration for the Salesian Family. SDBs, FMAs, Delegates, Past Pupils, Salesian Cooperators, VDBs, SMIs, and ADMA from Mumbai, Lonavla, Ahmednagar, Virar, Vasai, Pune, Chotta Udepur, Nerul, and Narukhot met together at Don Bosco Primary School Hall, Matunga. The response was overwhelming as we were in all about hundred and seventy in number.

Fr. Ajoy Fernandes presided over the Holy Mass concelebrated by Frs. Thomas D’Costa, Joe Braganza, Brian Moras, and Vivian D’Souza. The programme started with a prayerful Dance prepared by PP of FMA. Fr. Wilfred introduced the Salesian Cooperators of the twelve units; the new group of Aspirant-PP from Lonavla, and each of the other groups present.

The Chief Guest, Fr. Ajoy was felicitated with a bouquet of flowers. He then addressed the gathering, conveying the greetings of Fr. Michael Fernandes, (Provincial). He stressed that we as Salesian Family are collaborators and we all share in the common mission of reaching out to the poor youth in the rural areas following the Don Bosco India Project. The Strenna of 2012 by the Rector Major: “Let us make the young the mission of our life, coming to know and imitate Don Bosco”, was then presented with the DVD prepared in Rome, by Fr. Wilfred, Salesian Family Delegate. He invited all the units to spend two meetings to discuss this Strenna. Few dance and song items then enlivened the programme. Fr. Wilfred thereafter gave special thanks to Claudina and Ketan. Later he called on the units to fill in bio data forms, and fulfil certain norms before taking the Promise, and informed of the forthcoming outreach programme to Karjat on February 12, 2012.

Claudina raised the vote of thanks. The Salesian Family Day concluded with Fr. Joe Braganza blessing the meal. While some served themselves, the rest enjoyed a quick round of Housie and spot prizes all organized by the Past Pupils Federation. The function came to an end by 1.30 pm.

SALESIAN CO–OPERATORS CELEBRATE SILVER

KURLA, SEPTEMBER 30, 2011: It was a time of gratitude to God, a celebration of a Salesian vocation and reason to appreciate commitment and fidelity with joy.

Mrs. Theresa Pereira, Mrs. Philomena Mendes, Mrs. Rita D’Souza, Ms. Angeline Mendes, Mrs. Alice D’mello and Mr. Leo Pereira came together on Sunday, September 25, with family, friends and Salesian Co-operators to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of taking their promise as Salesian Co- operators.

At the Eucharist, concelebrated with the Salesian Community of Kurla, Fr. Adolph Furtado the Rector commended and thanked the Jubiliarians for their work and wished them well. He reminded them of Don Bosco’s expectations of the Salesian Co- operators especially in the area of the media. It was an emotional moment when the Jubiliarians renewed their promise surrounded by the Salesian Family.

A Get-together followed wherein the Past Pupils, Salesians, Salesian Co-operators, family and friends felicitated the Jubilarians. The presence of the Provincial Delegate Fr. Wilfred Dsouza as well as Mrs. Claudia Pinto, Provincial Coordinator was an expression of appreciation for the work and commitment of the Kurla Jubiliarians and the Unit.

Thanks to the capable organization of the local delegate Fr. Joe Braganza. It was a day that will be remembered with happiness by all.

SALFAM RECOLLECTION CUM WALKING PILGRIMAGE – BANDRA

MATUNGA, SEPTEMBER 7, 2011: On Sunday September 4, 2011 eighty members comprising Salesian Cooperators, ADMA, FMA, and Past Pupils gathered at St. Andrews High School, Bandra from 8.30 am. Fr. Wilfred D’Souza, Salesian Family Delegate welcomed Fr. Bastin Thomas sdb the preacher, as well as all the participants. A prayerful meditation on Psalm 94 before the Blessed Sacrament, interspersed with Hindi bhajans helped us spend time with Jesus.

After a short break and fellowship, Fr. Thomas presented the topic “Don Bosco the Exorcist” very vividly with excerpts from the Biographical Memoirs. Don Bosco had to fight the harassment of the Evil one against him and his boys. Spiritismrampant in Turin also lured away good Catholics. The participants interacted very well and various points were raised. It was clear that we have a duty to proclaim and not compromise our faith in every challenging situation. Fr. D’Souza in his homily at the Eucharist, concelebrated with Fr. Thomas, showed how God made Ezekiel responsible for admonishing God’s people. Jesus too wants us to help those who are going astray. Don Bosco calls the Salesian Family to bring the young to Jesus. He also made a mention of the Pastoral letter the Cardinal had just issued, concerning the new texts of the Missal to be in use from Advent this year.

Fr. Magi Murzello, Principal of St. Andrew School was profusely thanked for giving us the A.V. hall as well as organizing the canteen for our snacks and lunch. A bouquet of flowers and a Thank You card will be taken by Sr. Alka to him as he could not be present.

After a brief Vote of Thanks by Mrs. Claudina, the group started walking in procession to the Mount reciting the Rosary and the Divine Mercy prayer and singing hymns to Our Lady. After venerating our Blessed Mother and a cup tea, all dispersed having participated in a spiritual feast.

A NEW SALESIAN COOPERATOR’S UNIT-VASAI

VASAI, AUGUST 27, 2011: When the Relic of Don Bosco arrived at Our Lady of Grace Cathedral in Papdy, Vasai on the August 11, the enthusiasm and excitement was almost tangible. The crowds seemed never ending. The whole organization was diligently and ably guided and directed by Fr. William Falcao sdb assisted by a very large dedicated band of Salesian Past Pupils.

Some of the more committed of them with their spouses were seeking more than just a passing memorable event. As the long hours of the afternoon stretched into the night, a small group gathered with their own banner, prepared to launch the Vasai Unit of the Salesian Cooperators. It was to be the fulfilment of a long cherished dream that they had nurtured for several years.

A group of them held their first meeting on the August 20, 2011 to try and understand more clearly what the vocation of a Salesian Cooperator implies and to trace the way ahead. They listened attentively, discussed at length and chalked up some practical lines of action.

We now follow them with interest and wish them a fruitful growth in the Salesian Family.

A.G.M. OF THE INB PROVINCIAL PAST PUPILS FEDERATION

MATUNGA, AUGUST 6, 2011: The units of the Federation held their AGM on July 31, 2011, at the Provincial House, Matunga Mumbai from 10.00 am. There were forty six members present with a representative and delegate from Chottaudepur and the Delegate from Chinchwad. The Lonavla and Pune Units excused themselves.

Mr. Joseph Gomes led everyone into prayer; the President Mr. Ketan Gala welcomed the gathering, the Chief Guest Fr. Ajoy Fernandes, the Vice Provincial, and our newly appointed Delegate Fr. Wilfred D’Souza. In his welcoming address, Fr. D’Souza greeted the gathering and profusely thanked the outgoing Delegate Rev. Fr. Elias Dias for the wonderful work done all these years, with total dedication.

Fr. Ajoy Fernandes, the Delegates and the members from Nashik and Gujarat were felicitated with a bouquet of flowers. The Provincial Report was read out by the Secretary Mr. Wenceslaus Pinto. The Provincial Accounts were read by the Treasurer Mr. Joseph Gomes. The individual units presented their reports. The ex Delegate Rev. Fr. Elias Dias in absentia, was then given a standing ovation of thanks and appreciation for the marvelous work done for the last seventeen years.

Rev. Fr. Ajoy Fernandes a past pupil himself spoke on the unity of PP (Past Pupils). Seniors as well as the juniors together congratulated the Federation for all the reports and for maintaining the accounts well; and appreciated their active participation at the National and the Provincial level. He spoke on the Relic of Don Bosco which is the Hand that comforted and blessed millions of people; it comes now through the streets of Mumbai to bless us. He then invited the PP to look at different dimensions of: (1). Education & Culture, (2) Spiritual formation that contributes to life, (3) Fellowship and Groups with their families bonding relationship, (4) Physical Elements like the Games bonding togetherness.

Our Delegate Fr. Wilfred D’Souza said that PP is part of the Salesian Family, which has twenty eight branches, eight of which are there in India. He called for the family members of the PP to get involved; for bonding as batch mates with their past teachers; and for present SSC Students to be introduced to the Federation. Files and registers are to be well maintained. Encourage the PP in local areas to enter civil and political life example, the BMC and other public bodies. After the visit of The Relic of Don Bosco, continue the enthusiasm as we move to celebrate the bicentenary of the saint’s birth in 2015 and see how we can make Don Bosco known through the Media.

The meeting concluded at 12.15 pm with a Vote of thanks proposed by our President Mr. Ketan Gala.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF SALESIAN COOPERATORS

MATUNGA, JULY 25, 2011: The Salesian Cooperators as well as the SDB and FMA Delegates met together at the Provincial House on Sunday July 17, 2011, form 5pm- 8pm for their Annual General Meeting. In all thirty six Salesian Cooperators and seven sdb/fma delegates were present.

The Holy Eucharist was celebrated by Fr. Wilfred D’Souza, new Provincial Salesian Family Delegate. He stressed that in our units too, we all have to journey together and we should not encourage negative attitudes towards others. We have to use our meetings to build and not to destroy.

The minutes of the last AGM were read and passed. Mrs. Claudina Pinto, Provincial Coordinator read a note of gratitude and farewell to Fr. Elias Dias, the outgoing Provincial Delegate and a standing ovation of appreciation was given to him in absentia. The Annual General Report, a summary of Activity Reports and the Statement of Accounts for the year 2010-2011 were read and passed. Lists of the programmes that are lined up for the coming year were then presented. Fr. D’Souza concluded the meeting, exhorting our units to grow in numbers, stressing the importance for initial and ongoing Formation to be guided by a local Councilor in charge of Formation, who should be prepared for this.

The members expressed a strong desire to gather round the relic of Don Bosco when it visits the Shrine at Matunga.

SALESIAN FAMILY DAY CELEBRATED

MUMBAI, JANUARY 18, 2011: The annual Salesian Family Day of Mumbai Province was held on January 16, 2011 at Our Lady of Dolorus Church, Wadala from 11am to 4pm. This year we made a change in the time table for the benefit of the out stationed members of the Salesian Family. Hundred and eighty seven members of the different branches of the family participated in the Family Day.
At the outset of the programme Rev. Fr. Elias Dias welcomed Rev Fr. Provincial Fr. Michael Fernandes for the concelebrated Mass. He thanked the Parish Priest and units of cooperators and Past pupils for organizing this programme. He also thank all the members specially those who came from outside Mumbai for their love, enthusiasm and sacrifice.

Fr. Michael Fernandes concelebrated the Holy Eucharist with other priests. In his homily he highlighted the strenna of 2011 Come and See. The call of Jesus is extended to all so that we may be active members in the mission of Jesus. Evangelization and vocation are two inseparable aspects of the strenna. All evangelized are called to become disciples of Jesus. Fr. Provincial drew our attention towards the specific call of the disciples who are called to share experience with others. In his pedagogical direction Fr. Provincial asked the members of the Salesian Family to appreciate their vocation and ask others to come and see the Salesian way of life.

After the Mass the strenna of the Rector Major 2011 was projected in the A.V. Hall. Last year the strenna was “Sir, we want to see Jesus” This year Fr. Chaves makes a heartfelt appeal to the whole Salesian Family to feel the need for vocation ministry. He calls us to feel more strongly than ever the challenges of creating a vocational culture in every setting such that that young people may discover life as a call and all the Salesian Ministry may be truly vocational. Another fundamental element in vocation ministry is a regular personal accompaniment of the young person.
Fr. Wilfred D Souza presented the Pilgrimage of the Casket. This will be an occasion to take up once again in our heads the life of Don Bosco as desired by the Rector Major. The Worldwide Salesian Family will come to pray, before the casket forming a community of faith called by Christ to holiness. A family which desires to sanctify itself following the example of Don Bosco.
This pilgrimage through hundred and twenty countries will conclude in time for the second centenary of the birth of St. John Bosco. The relics of Don Bosco will be in our Province from August 4 to August 16, 2011. It is hoped that the entire event will help our people and us to love, to study, to imitate, to pray and make Don Bosco known.
The presentations were followed by a few entertainment items. Units of Cooperators from Wadala and Borivli entertained the members with their song and dance. Fr. Vincent Rasquinha blessed the food. It was followed by a sort housie game. Fr. Elson Barretto spoke on Don Bosco Development Society. DBDS is a network of partner organizations working across the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan with tribal, rural and urban communities. Their major areas of work are 1. Agricultural and Ecological Department. 2. Promotion of People’ Rights and Good Governance. 3. Skill Developments and Livelihood Promotion 4. Universal Education and 5. Child Protection and Child Rights.

Fr. Ajoy Fernandes developed the concept on MORD and the Youth Ministry. Youth Ministry does the work by imparting SYS training to all in our formation houses and we have well defined project for them. In our parishes we have given a great boost to Altar Servers and a youth movements. We are hoping that through this more involved methodology we will also be able to inspire and motivate boys to join us. Thus youth and vocation ministry are tied together
Fr. Brian Moras spoke on Vocation Ministry and Vocation Guidance which aim at enabling the young person to understand what God wants him to do. Vocation Ministry also focuses on helping young people to understand if God is really calling them to the Priesthood or Religious Life.
Fr. Joaquim Fernandes dealt with the communication aspect in our Province. He said that the Tej- Prasarini is involved disseminating information. To give pastoral formation and finally engaged in production. He said that SPCSA is intending to bring out a movie on Don Bosco.

Sr. Phyllis Fernandes raised the vote of thanks, thus came the end of Salesian Family Day 2011.

SALESIAN FAMILY OUTREACH PROGRAM

THANE, NOVEMBER 29, 2010: The members of the Salesian family went for an outreach program to Bosco Samaj Vikas Sanstha at Jawahar, Thane district on Sunday November 28, 2010. Bosco Samaj Vikas Sanstha is a social development organization working across the Thane district of Maharashtra with tribal and rural communities. Seventy members of the Salesian family, Salesian fathers, Sisters, Cooperators, Past Pupils, ADMA and VDB from different centre of Mumbai left the city by two buses. One from Matunga and the other from Andheri and Borivili at 7.30am. After a long journey of four hours they reached the destination and were welcomed by Fr. Anaclete D’Mello and other staff members with a broad smile.

Fr. Elias Dias, Fr. Wilfred D’Souza and Fr. Lloyd Rodrigues celebrated Holy Eucharist. In his homily Fr. Elias Dias spoke about advent and how to prepare for the coming of Christ. He said; 1. By giving in- whatever differences we had in the past. 2. By giving up- our sins and our weaknesses. 3. By giving out- by sharing ourselves and our goods with others we will have a wonderful Christmas.

After the mass Mr. Melvin and Fr. Anaclete explained to the members their social works in the villages and how the programs are oriented towards the education and empowering poor people to become the agents of social change for the transformation of society.

After lunch the members played a short housie game and were then divided into groups who visited different villages. When they came back they had snacks. Sr. Phyllis Fernandes thanked Fr. Anaclete on his hospitality and all the arrangements. The members of the Family contributed their mite for the development of this tribal project. The Past pupil of Andheri unit adopted one village. All admired the challenging work done by the Salesians in this neglected belt of Adivasis in Maharashtra.

SALESIAN COOPERATORS AT KAPADVANJ

BORIVLI, NOVEMBER 23, 2010: During Mission Sunday in October 2010, Fr Isaac of Don Bosco Kapadvanj Mission, Gujarat showcased an interesting presentation of the works done by the Salesian priests and brothers at that mission. Fr Isaac concluded his presentation with an invitation to the congregation to come and witness their work. The Salesian Cooperators, Borivali Unit, took up this invitation and decided to visit Kapadvanj. On November 15, 2010 at 8.30 pm, thirteen Salesian Cooperators accompanied by their delegate, Fr Ronnie Menezes boarded the Lokshakti Express, to see firsthand the works done by our Salesian priests and brothers at the missions.

We met the eleven aspirants residing at the house, the three coordinators of the Self Help Groups (SHGs) and the other activities at the house of Kapadvanj.

After a brief talk by Mr. Shailesh, Fr Isaac took the Cooperators around two villages to witness the rural life and the work being done by the SHGs. We first visited Dholivav Village. There are two SHGs operating in this village and they are presently engaged in building a kachha road under NREGA Scheme. We next visited Motipura village, where there are five SHGs comprising of seventy five members. These villagers are engaged in agriculture, animal husbandry and plants nursery. The villagers greeted us warmly and said a beautiful prayer in their dialect. The Cooperators interacted with the villagers and bonded with them by dancing the garba.

On the second day our first stop was at the Church of Khambholaj where there is a statue of ‘Our Lady of the Forsaken (Anathoni Mata)’ which has come all the way from Spain. The next stop was at ‘Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour’ (Nityasahayani Mata) in Jitodia. The priest there gave us a brief talk about the church, which is built along the lines of the Shrine of Mount Mary, Bandra. We then moved on to see the Shrine of Divine Mercy at Salon.

We were also fortunate to meet the FMA sisters at Pansora and at Pushpanjali. After a sumptuous dinner with the Salesians at Dakor we began our return journey home.

We are very grateful to Fr Isaac for giving us an insight into their mission and allowing us to share this beautiful experience with the Salesian Family. It was indeed a very memorable trip for all the Cooperators and will be etched in our minds as a beautiful memory.

SALESIAN COOPERATORS NARUKOT VISIT

MUMBAI, NOVEMBER 22, 2010: Seven co-operators of Mumbai Province made a visit to the jungles of Jambughoda [Don Bosco Narukot] from November 17 to November 19, 2010. Fr Stanny Ferreira, Rector of Don Bosco Narukot welcomed us. The purpose of the trip was to animate the co-operators group and see the wonderful work our Salesians are doing there. On the first day we met ten co-operators of Narukot unit and had a long session with them explaining to them in a nut shell the Project of Apostolic Life and the method of conducting the meetings. The next day we met the co-operators again where we shared our experiences discussing in depth of Don Bosco's vision of his great mission of uplifting the youth in all strata of life and the mission statement drawn at the Third South Asia Regional Congress 'RETURN TO DON BOSCO RETURN TO THE YOUNG'.

The Coordinator and the committee members were so enthused with Charism and motivation of Don Bosco that they wanted to show us the work they carry on in different villages. The first visit was to Gandhra village in the mountains of Jambughoda. There we saw the water shed project carried on by the Salesian Fathers and the green fields. It was like another Scotland. Then we proceeded to Garumal and Chalwad villages where we visited the houses of the villagers and students/boarders studying in Don Bosco School.

On the second day we went to Duma village where Fr Stanny celebrated the Mass for the villagers. About twenty people with their children attended the service. After the service some of the co-operators played with the children and distributed sweets to them. Our Provincial Coordinator Mrs Claudina Pinto explained to the people the work the Salesian Co-operators do. Some of the village people showed their willingness to work for Don Bosco's mission by becoming Co-operators. On the way back we visited another village Masabar, where the Salesians conduct a Village Education Project class for children of villages who are poor. Approximately thirty such centres are being run with the help of the Cooperators. The children were so happy that they sang Gujarati songs for us. We taught them English Nursery rhymes which they picked up so beautifully and sang without any help.
At 11am we visited the Maharaja and Maharani's Palace and had a historical background of it. Father Stanny told us that Don Bosco’s Technical Institution teaches Hotel Management and Hospitality so that many tribal youth could be trained and get better living in Narukot where family could live together and thus instilling family values. In the evening we visited Zallaria and Kesarpura villages where one community centre is opened to conduct different activities like teaching cathecism, Mahila mandal, youth centre, and adult education. Here the co-operators distributed sweets and clothes to the children and adults. We also enjoyed the adivasi food.
On the third day morning after the Eucharist we visited the farm and the families of the co-operators, in the evening on our way back home we visited Snehalya Shelter Don Bosco. Here we interacted with the boys. They were very happy to meet us and talk to us. They had so much to say and we had so much to hear but the time was not enough. We are very much inspired by the work of our Salesian family members in Narukot. We could not imagine how people live there in poverty and misery but the love and spontaneous hospitality has shaken us. The cooperators thanked the Mumbai cooperators for visiting them and encouraged them to be the long hands and feet of Don Bosco.

ADMA GOES ON A MARIAN PILGRIMAGE

MATUNGA, OCTOBER 12, 2010: Saturday October 9 was chosen as a suitable day to go on a pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima at Karjat. The Marian Devotees left our Shrine at Matunga in a bus at 7.00 am and headed straight for the other Marian Shrine. We were greeted warmly by the Priest in Charge, Fr. Callistus Fernandes. Unexpectedly, we were joined by another group and were able to celebrate a Mass together in the little Church well decorated for the feast on October 13. ADMA members were content to have the opportunity to pray the novena prayer and spend time in personal prayer.
We then headed for Don Bosco’s. It was a first time visit that brought great ‘oohs and aahs’ to everyone’s lips. It seemed unbelievable what the Salesians are capable of.
Fr. Xavier was a most wonderful host spending the rest of the morning with us. His informative inputs left everyone so impressed and he certainly made many new friends as he had an eager, enquiring audience. A good lunch, a little siesta and a round of party games made up the rest of the afternoon, before we got ready for the journey back home. It was a memorable day that also served to offer members a chance to get to know each other better, this being their first outing together.

SALESIAN COOPERATORS RETREAT

CHINCHWAD, OCTOBER 6, 2010: The Salesian cooperators took a couple of days off from their family life and spent two days in the calm of the Don Bosco non formal technical setup at Chinchwad. The group of fifty four enthusiastic members of the Salesian family came in on the evening of October 1, 2010. Fr. Vivan D’souza was the animator. At the outset of the retreat Fr. Corlis and his community welcomed the members. Mrs. Claudina Pinto gave a warm welcome to the cooperators, thanked Fr. Vivan for accepting to preach the retreat and Fr. Corlis and his community for making it possible to conduct the retreat at Chinchwadi. Fr. Vivan D’souza then took over to initiate the group into recollection through an introductory talk and the power point presentation. The next day was spent on self–emptying process and on the sacrament of reconciliation.

The last day was dedicated to Christ experience this culminated into a beautiful and unique experience of surrender. Fr. Elias Dias celebrated the concluding Holy Eucharist. In his homily he said that Don Bosco was a guide for many people who wanted to climb the mountain of holiness. Don Bosco offered a few means to achieve his holiness:
·         Word of god
·         Spiritual reading on the lives of saints
·         Reception of the sacrament of reconciliation and communion
·         Popular devotions
·         Practice of virtues and get involved in the active charity.

Do all these simple things for the greater glory of God. Mrs. Philomena Mendes gave the vote of thanks. She thanked Fr. Dias for organizing the retreat, Fr. Vivan for his animation and for Fr. Corlis and his community for their kindness, generosity and hospitality.

PAST PUPIL MEET FOR THE YEAR 2010-2011

DAKOR, SEPT EMBER 21, 2010: The past pupils meeting took place on September 19, 2010. The meeting began with the prayer moments led by bro. Anthony. Around twenty youth had gathered for the meeting and it was nice to see some of the older students present there for the meeting.

In the second half of the meeting Mr. Hasmukh one of the resource person was called upon to give the talk to the youth. The resource person spoke on the topic of dealing with different situation in life and especially when it is easy to live life for oneself but difficult to live for another. He also spoke to them on the topic that it is important that we help each other in the different situations in life. Then the youth went for lunch after the session and came back for the second session which was taken by Fr. Mayank Parmar sdb on how to become the member of the past pupil unit and he invited the youngsters that nothing is impossible in life. He also spoke to them about the joining of the past pupils association. In the evening the past pupils were provided tea and snacks they enjoyed the day. They had a little jam session in the hall. The students were interested in having a basketball match with the boarders and they played a good game recalling the days when they used to play in their boarding days.the meeting ended on a good note and they went away saying good bye to come back for the good memories that they had cherished for their lives.

RECOLLECTION CUM PILGRIMAGE OF THE SALESIAN FAMILY

BANDRA, SEPTEMBER 6, 2010: The annual Recollection cum Pilgrimage to Mt. Mary’s was held at Auxilium Convent, Pali Hill Bandra on September 5, 2010. There were seventy- four members who took part in the program.

Fr. Elias Dias welcomed the members of the Salesian family for the Recollection cum Pilgrimage. He thanked Sr. Theresa Joseph and her community for making all the necessary arrangements for the program. He also thanked Fr. Ivan Rodriques for accepting to celebrate the mass and preach the homily for the group.

Mrs. Claudina Pinto informed the members about forth coming Spiritual Retreat at Chinchwal Pune at the end of this month.

In the first session Sr. Phyllis Fernandez the National delegate of the Salesian family for FMA exposed with PowerPoint presentation the life and holiness of Don Michael Rua.

This was followed by a group discussion and sharing of ideas. In the second session she dealt with the lives of our Patrons: Don Bosco, Mary Mazarello and St. Francis de Sales.

Fr. Ivan Rodriques celebrated the Holy Eucharist. In his homily he spoke on blessed Mother Theresa. Her vocation and the crosses. All Christians are called to carry their own crosses. As members of the Salesian family we have our own crosses to carry. He encouraged the members to live as real Disciples of Christ. After lunch the members went in procession to Mt. Mary. On their way they recited the holy rosary and sang hymns. At the basilica a short prayer service was conducted prepared by the Pali Hill unit of the co-operators.

Mrs. Philomena Mendes thanked the sisters of Pali Hill Convent, Fr. Ivan Rodriques, Fr. Elias Dias and all the co-operators for making this program a success.

BIS #1989 ANIMATION PROGRAM FOR THE SALESIAN FAMILY

MATUNGA, AUGUST 23, 2010: The Salesian animation program for the members of the Salesian family was held on August 22, 2010 at Don Bosco Provincial house Mumbai. The animators were Rev Fr. Joaqim D’Souza Provincial of UPS and Fr. Elias Dias the Provincial delegate of the Salesian family Mumbai Province.

The theme of the animation was the historical aspect of the life of Don Bosco. There were seventy members from different branches of the Salesian family present for the program.
At the Eucharist Fr. Joaqim D’Souza was the main celebrant. In his homily he said that god wants us to be saints but he will not do it without our co-operation. We all are the members of the Salesian family and we want to be saved by following the spirituality of Don Bosco. Once Don Bosco said to his students that all are called to be saved. It is easy to be saved. God rewards to those who achieve his holiness. How can we achieve this holiness? Don Bosco gave us a short way to holiness. Be cheerful, do your duties well and engage in the apostolate. We will be able to do this only when we have apostolic charity in our hearts.

The topic of animation was dealt by Fr. Elias Dias. In the first part he explained the reason why we should study Don Bosco. He then spoke on the ancestry, childhood days; schooldays, seminary days, and the ordination of Don Bosco. In the second part he explained his life at the Convitto Eccelesiastico, Wandering Oratory and his settlement at the Penardi shed. In the third part he spoke about the development of the Oratory, founding and the spread of the congregation, his missionary zeal, his death and beatification and canonization.
The members of the Salesian family were very pleased to know and learn the whole life of don Bosco. Mrs. Claudina Pinto the Provincial coordinator of the Salesian co-operators proposed the vote of thanks.

THE FIRST COMMITMENT DAY FOR ADMA

MATUNGA, AUGUST 20, 2010: ADMA – The Association of Mary Help of Christians celebrated the Commitment made by twenty of its first Members on Saturday August 14, 2010. The occasion was even more special due to the presence of Fr. Klement Vaclav. They received their commitment at the 8.15 Mass. As they stood before God’s altar answered the questions put to them about their understanding of their enrollment and then recited the formula of the Commitment. Each of them received a Badge of Mary Help of Christians and Membership Card from Turin and the book of Regulations printed in the National Centre of the Salesian Family.

The Association started at the Shrine of Don Bosco’s Madonna, Matunga on September 8, 2009 and has been regularly holding their formation meetings on the first Saturday of every month under the direction of Fr. Wilfred D’Souza. On the May 24, 2010 the local unit was officially aggregated to the Primary Association at the Basilica in Turin and a Diploma to this effect has been received.

ANDHERI, AUGUST 19, 2010: The AGM for the year 2010-2011 was held on August 15, 2010 at 11.00 am in the Conference Room, Dominic Savio School (Andheri East). It started with a pre-session of Registrations and snacks arranged by the Past Pupil Committee.
The AGM commenced with Edgar inviting Mr. Remeth Fernandes to lead the Past Pupil’s prayer. As we were also celebrating our Independence Day all joined in singing the National Anthem. Mr. Edgar then welcomed Father Edwin Colaco to forward the proceedings.

Our Delegate, Fr. Edwin Colaco then started the proceedings with a beautiful thought on the importance of having a Vision. He then welcomed all the members (approx. forty attendees) attending the Annual General Meeting. He welcomed and thanked our Chief Guests Fr. Godfrey D Souza, the rector, Fr. Godfrey D’Sa, Fr. Glenn Lowe, Mr. Sharma and Mrs. Iyer. He also thanked all the former board members who were present for the AGM. He also welcomed the reigning board members and wished them good luck for the coming years. Father then elaborated on the AGM Agenda.

Rector Fr. Godfrey in his short talk stressed on the spirit and greatness of our country India, Few encouraging words were also given by Fr. Glen and Mrs. Iyer on the eve of Independence Day. This was followed by the reading of the annual Reports and accounts.

The Past pupils then had an open discussion to plan for the year ahead. They focussed on social, spiritual and service needs. It was followed by a brainstoming session on how to collect funds to fulfil the vision of the past pupils. The past pupils no doubt are looking forward to the future activities with optimism and hope.

MATUNGA, JULY 13, 2010: The Annual General Meeting of the Provincial Federation of Don Bosco Past Pupils, Mumbai was held at Provincial House, Matunga on July 11, 2010 at 6 pm. Forty Seven members from different parts of Mumbai and Nashik were present. The meeting began with a Past Pupil’s prayer led by Mr. Wency Pinto. Rev. Fr. Dias, the provincial delegate of the Salesian Family welcomed the gathering. He then introduced Fr. Glenford Lowe, the chief guest of the evening. Mr. Ketan Gala read the annual report for the year 2009-2010. The statement of accounts was read by Mr. Wency Pinto. Each unit of the Federation then read out their yearly reports that were much appreciated by all.

Fr. Glenford Lowe, in his address to the gathering, invited the Past Pupils’ Federation to open itself to the present day scenario and offer significant Salesian style responses to the youth of today. Through a small activity and discussion he drew home the point that we must be ready to accept and enlarge our capacities to work together as a Federation.

Mr. Ketan Gala, the President of the Federation of the Mumbai Province thanked the gathering.

MUMBAI, JULY 8, 2010: The Salesian Family of Don Bosco, Mumbai Province (SALFAM) presented a Konkani drama “Kednam- Uttolo” – Prince Jacob’s production on Tuesday July 6, 2010 at Yeshwant hall Matunga West, Mumbai. The show began at 8.15pm. Rev. Fr. Michael Fernandes, Provincial of the Mumbai Province and many other members of the Salesian family were present.

The purpose of this project was to gather all the members of the Salesian family of the Mumbai province and work towards a common goal. Secondly, it was also our intention, to collect funds with the help of the members of the Salesian family that would be utilized for the activities and the formation of the members of the Salesian family. The drama depicted the present political, social and economical scenario of Goa and invited the Goans to get up and act.
We sincerely thank Rev. Fr. Michael the Salesian Provincial of the Mumbai Province for his support towards this event. I sincerely thank all the advertisers and donors for their generous contribution. I also take this opportunity to thank all the collaborators who worked so hard in order to make this event a success. ANNUAL GENERAL BODY MEETING OF SALESIAN CO-OPERATORS

MATUNGA, JULY 6, 2010: The Annual General Body meeting of the co-operators Bombay province was held on July 4, 2010 at A.V hall Provincial House Matunga.

Rev Fr. Brian Moras the national delegate of the vocation, Sr. Phyllis Fernandes the national delegate of the Salesian family, Rev. Fr. Elias Dias the provincial delegate of the Salesian family Mumbai. A group of Salesian co-operators from Kuwait and fifty-six Salesian co-operators were present for the meeting. The celebration began with a con-celebrated mass. In his homily Fr. Brian said “Jesus called his disciples for the kingdom of god and gave them values opposite to the world. This kingdom consists of justice, peace and love. And we are all called to spread his kingdom on earth.

After the holy mass Fr. Elias Dias welcomed the gathering. Mrs. Philomena Mendes read out the minutes of the previous AGM. Mrs. Jacinta D’Souza read the annual report as Mr. Christopher Gomes read out the statement of accounts.

Mrs. Claudina Pinto upraised the co-operators about the activities to be held during the coming year. Fr. Elias Dias spoke on the fund raising project of the Salesian family on July 6, 2010 he praised the few co-operators for their work and enthusiasm.

Since the general election of co-operators of Don Bosco of the Mumbai province was due. The assembly decided to re- appoint the same committee. All agreed and the election was held according to the norms of the constitution of the co-operators.

SALESIAN FAMILY PICNIC ANDHERI UNIT

ANDHERI, APRIL 20, 2010: The Salesian Family members (35 Cooperators and 12 Past Pupils) went to Don Bosco Asha Kiran - Karjat, a project for street youngsters, for a picnic. It was the first time that both the Cooperators and the Past Pupils went together to Asha Kiran. A full bus assured there was a lot of excitement in the air. This year the Delegate made a special effort to increase the number of cooperators and get in some younger blood. The senior members were delighted to see new faces and welcomed them for the picnic.

At Asha Kiran the picnickers got ready for mass to make sure the Lord took the most important place in their lives. After a good breakfast Fr. Xavier sat with the group and gave them an idea of all that was happening at Asha Kiran. He spoke of the intake of the boys and youngsters who were admitted into Asha Kiran and said that those with any qualification or having passed their X standard or those who were able to pay fees were automatically disqualified. He also spoke about eco-friendly methods and how we need to preserve and save mother earth. The tour as expressed by many was very informative and relaxing.

Just after the tour, the Cooperators sat for a meeting for the elections of new Council Members. The following members were elected: Mrs. Benny Lobo as a Council member; Mrs. Audrey D'Costa as Assistant Coordinator; Mr. Joauquim Fernandes as Council Member; Mr. Joseph Serrao as the new Coordinator of the Cooperators; Mrs. Ida Rocha as a Council member & Mrs. Crispina Rebello as the Treasurer of the unit.

After lunch there were a couple of games that kept everyone on their toes. With the games and fun time it was time for tea and to make our good byes. After a set of thank yous and tokens of appreciation, it was certainly a day that the Salesian Family Members of the Andheri Unit will not easily forget.

SALESIAN COOPERATORS' DAY WITH GOD

NERUL, MARCH 15, 2010: The Salesian Cooperators of the Don Bosco Nerul Unit gathered together on the morning of March 14, 2010 for their half day with God. The Program began with an adoration service, where the group prayed for their needs, and the needs of the house and the province. A reflection on the 'Temptations of Jesus' was offered by Fr. Vivian D'Souza, the animator. The group then spent time reflecting on this gospel passage as it gave them a lot of food for thought for their personal lives. This hour concluded with a benediction service. After Tea break a power point presentation on "God speaks to us" made them rekindle the element of faith and trust in God's Word. This was followed by a beautifully animated "Way of the Cross" on power point, which took up the next hour. The final hour was devoted to personal reflection and to the celebration of the Eucharist at which Fr. Vivian initiated a lively shared reflection on the parable of the Prodigal Son (the day's gospel) and linked it up with the reflection of the 'Temptations of Jesus'. He challenged us to make a shift from a 'reckless faith' (the second temptation of Jesus & the younger son in the gospel), to a life of deep and lasting faith. This was exemplified in the parable, with the Prodigal Son's realization that his real place was not in the 'pig sty of the world' but in his Father's house, and hence the 'coming back' to the Father. He also emphasized the fact that our problems, anxieties and hurts come from our attitude of "rejection", as was manifested by the elder son. This area in our life needs a change. The Recollection concluded with a nicely prepared lunch. We thus left Don Bosco’s' nourished spiritually and materially

COOPERATORS REACH OUT

NERUL, MARCH 8, 2010: The Salesian Cooperators of the Don Bosco, Nerul unit is just a couple of months old and has fifteen members at present. Ten members of this group undertook a trip to the Vaduz Bal Ashram at Panvel, on February 28, 2010. This Ashram, belonging to the MSFS Fathers, and run by the Sisters, houses 25 underprivileged girls, who attend the St. Joseph’s School, nearby. The Cooperators had collected/bought several items of clothing, toiletries, food etc. and handed them over to the Sisters. More than this, they played with the children and even organized a very interesting and competitive ‘Antakshari’ which pitted the children against the Cooperators. This not only made the evening very lively but also created a bonding, wherein the children asked the group to come again for a whole day.

The Salesian Cooperators were happy at this experience and some expressed a desire to bring their families over or take a couple of children to their homes for a day or two. A Lenten Recollection to be held on March 14, 2010 is one of the programmes in the pipeline for Don Bosco, Nerul.

DON BOSCO ALUMNI FAMILY GET TOGETHER

MUMBAI, MARCH 4, 2010: Don Bosco Alumni organized a family get-together on the evening of February 27, 2010 at the Don Bosco High School, Matunga quadrangle for the past pupils and their family members. Fr. Michael Fernandes, Provincial; Fr. Elias Dias the Provincial Delegate and Fr. Jude D’Mello, Rector were present for the occasion. The school teachers who completed twenty five years in service graced the event.

A musical evening added colour to the get together where every body listened to Hindi songs and a variety of mouth watering south Indian delicacies added to the flavor of the evening. Amidst the action Fr. Michael inaugurated the Don Bosco Alumni Souvenir 2010, which consisted of messages from the Provincial, Delegates and the Principal, and the activities of the Matunga unit from 2008-09. The list of advertisers and sponsors who contribute and help every year also featured in the Souvenir.

The Past Pupils’ turn out was much more than last year. They gathered to the reputation of Boscoites doing things in a grand manner with fun, frolic and gaiety but most of all in a peaceful way.

Thanks to the President Mr. Jayesh Chandan, Mr. Roger D’Mello, Vice President, Mr. Jeeghar Karani, VP-GEX and the hard working office bearers’ team of the Past Pupils’ Association, who worked to make this event a great success.

SOUTHERN ZONAL CONFERENCE OF SALESIAN COOPERATORS

MUMBAI, FEBRUARY 15, 2010: The Southern Zonal Conference of Salesian Cooperators was held on February 14, 2010 at Don Bosco provincial house, Matunga. The members of the southern provinces of India; Fr. K. J. Louis, national delegate of the Salesian Cooperators and Mr. K. V. Francis, councilor and the cooperator participated in it.

The programme began with the Holy Eucharist in the crypt by Fr. Michael Fernandes, Provincial and other concelebrants. At the beginning, Fr. Elias Dias, provincial delegate of Mumbai province, welcomed the gathering and introduced Fr. Michael to the assembly. It was followed by self introduction by other members of the conference. In his homily Fr. Michael said that God wants us to be happy. After explaining the false notion of happiness he mentioned that the way of the Beatitudes is the true way to happiness. Happiness does not consist of what we have but what we are.

The official meeting of the conference was held in the A. V. hall of the Provincial House. Mrs. Frieda D’Souza welcomed the guests and presented a rose to all as a token of friendship. Sr. Phyllis Fernandes, national delegate of FMA conducted the prayer service.

The minutes of the last meeting were read and passed. During the morning session using PPT Fr. K. J. Louis gave an insight on the Preventive System of Don Bosco. He believed that when young people are surrounded by healthy and empowering environment and wise educators they would naturally grow and blossom, hence the first pre requisite for implementing Don Bosco’s educational system is the homely environment be it in the school, home or any where else. The environment could be characterized by reason, religion and kindness. Therefore the chief concern of the educator would be to create and maintain the right environment.

In the Preventive System the educators approach would be of accompaniment rather than supervision. The tern accompaniment implies that the educators are also on a journey along with the young. They are part of the system. The accompaniment becomes possible only in the climate of friendship, trust and genuine affection. In brief Be there, Be aware and Care. ‘Being there’ implies being present to the young and with the young and it is the key to a wholesome healthy and happy environment.’ Be aware’ implies having deep understanding of the young and their world. ‘Caring’ implies having heart of a father. It is not enough to love them but they must know that they are loved. In Don Bosco’s system whatever be the responsibility of the educator being there, being aware and giving care takes precedent at all times.

In the second talk Fr. K. J. Louis highlighted the characteristics of Christian leadership using the word charisma as an acrostic i.e. concern, health, action, result, influence, sensibility, motivation and affirmation.

Post lunch all the provinces read their reports about the implementation of the resolution of the Chennai Congress: Return to Don Bosco, return to the young.

A discussion was held on the Article 36 of the Project of Apostolic life. Mr. K. V. Francis read the minutes of the meeting held in Rome and informed that he had a very fruitful world council meeting. The meeting was mainly to discuss the organizational challenge and finalization of PAL document before the world congress 2012.

Mr. Wilfred Rebello proposed the vote of thanks and Ms.. Jacqueline from Chennai thanked the Mumbai province for hosting the meeting.

SALESIAN FAMILY DAY 2010: MUMBAI

MUMBAI, JANUARY 18, 2010: Seven of the vast 27 Salesian Family members met at Don Bosco Institute of Learning, Kurla on January 17, 2010, to celebrate their annual Salesian Family Day. Over 230 members representing the SDBs, FMAs, Cooperators, Past Pupils, SMIs, VDBs and ADMAs participated in the get-together.

Fr. Provincial presided at a Solemn Eucharist concelebrated by a number of priests representing the various units in the Province. At the homily, Fr. Provincial blended the Strenna for the year 2010 “We want to see Jesus” together with the gospel reading “They have no Wine”. In the finitude of our lives we seek the person of Jesus who gives us a new infilling. In the centenary of the death of Don Rua, this is our new calling - “to imitate him who was a faithful disciple, always dynamic, transforming water in wine”, he said.

The Salesian Family members were then introduced to the Strenna of the Rector Major. In true Salesian style, the evening had a lot in store: from Koli dances to Bollywood beats, songs from Becchi SDBs to Mornese FMAs. No one would have liked to be left out…. a family photo froze the memorable moment in time. The community of DB Kurla spared no efforts to provide us with the best.

Fr. Brian Moras took the opportunity to invite the Salesian Family to get involved in the up-coming Youth Ministry holiday and Vocation Camps. The harvest is still rich and the Salesian family was invited to ‘pray their part’ and propose to young people “Why NOT, a PRIEST?”

A sumptuous meal and fellowship brought the event to a close. Thanks to Fr. Elias Diaz, the delegate for the Salesian Family, for his untiring efforts to lead the SF to greater strength and commitment.

HOMILY OF FR. PROVINCIAL: SALESIAN FAMILY DAY 2010 AT DON BOSCO INSTITUTE OF LEARNING, KURLA

St. Paul tells us in the second reading: “There are different gifts but the same Spirit: there are different ministries but the same Lord; there are different works but the same God who accomplishes all of them in everyone. To each person the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good”. Paul then proceeds to list 9 examples of the wonderful variety of Gods gifts to the Corinthian community. At the end of the list he again stresses their common source- God- and their common purpose- the good of the community.

If we look at our Christian community we will notice that we have a variety of gifts from God- in occupational skills some of us are doctors, professors, scientists, lawyers, craftsmen or tradesmen, others are cooks or seamstresses; in artistic talents some of us are musicians or singers, others are writers or painters; in interpersonal qualities some of us are strong leaders or organizers, others are good listeners or available helpers; in spiritual gifts some of us have immense faith or indestructible hope, others have a capacity to pray or interpret scripture.

But with the gifts come an awesome responsibility- the gifts are given not only to enrich us personally, but also to serve the community. So there is no room for rivalry or jealousy because others have gifts we do not have. Our diversity is a call to unity and our talents are a call to ministry.

In the gospel we hear about the miracle of Cana. This is the transformation of water into the best wine. What was colorless and bland becomes colorful and sparkling, a source of joy and energy. The Jewish religion had become bland, self centered, focused on personal purity. Now it is renewed and brings joy to others. Jesus transformed the religion of his time and made it more humane- the Sabbath is for human beings and not human beings for the Sabbath.

In Jesus’ parable the kingdom is often compared to a wedding feast. When the Pharisees complained that Jesus’ disciples did not fast he answered them that the ‘bridegroom was with them.’ In contrast with John the Baptist, Jesus ‘comes eating and drinking.’ We are doing things as we always have done, relating with family, friends and fellow workers as before. When we hear that the people around us have ‘no wine’ we see no reason why they should turn to us. Like Jesus we say: ‘My hour has not yet come”. We are afraid to get involved; we like to remain in our comfort zone, untouched by the pain of others. So often we act as if this is not our concern. Mary’s words to Jesus at the wedding at Cana are echoing in many countries today. Men and women have no wine to share with their families. Since the wine that nature provided by the festivals has all gone, plundered by the modern economy, industrial estates, calamities, selfishness and misdirected projects. We should transform water into wine and become agents of social change.

Jesus performed the miracle; nevertheless he had the help of servants. They brought the stone jars to him. If they did not then there would have been no miracle of transformation. And so the message of the gospel is not only that Jesus can transform the loss, the boredom, the pain, the betrayal, that any of us feel, not only can he restore hope that we once knew and feel the love that has gone out of our lives; not only can Jesus do that but he asks us necessarily, to help with the miracle. Jesus can transform the wine but he needs the help of servants to do that.

The annual strenna is a real spiritual and pastoral programme. It helps us as disciples and apostles to build the church and transform the world. It helps us to look beyond ourselves and see who is running out of wine, who needs to see Jesus.

On the occasion of the centenary of the death of Fr. Michael Rua, most faithful to Don Bosco and to his charism, the RM invites all the members of the Salesian family to become ever more and more disciples in love with Jesus and his enthusiastic apostles and to commit themselves to the evangelization of the young. He tell us: let us speak to them about Christ, let us tell them about our meeting with him, let us tell his story, let us give them the programme of happiness which He offers us in the Beatitudes, let us tell them how beautiful life is once he has been encountered and how much joy there is in being clasped by Him and being drawn into the cause of the Kingdom of God.

“Sir, we want to see Jesus.” In imitation of Don Rua, as authentic disciples and zealous apostles, let us bring the Gospel to the young.

Some groups of the Salesian Family are in harmony with this task. By way of example the RM gives us two passages fro the General Chapters of the SDB and FMA.

The XXVI General Chapter of the Salesians shows its awareness of the urgent need to evangelize and of the centrality of proposing Jesus Christ: we perceive evangelization as the principal requirement of our mission, aware that the young have a right to have Jesus proclaimed to them as the source of life and promise of happiness now and in eternity. The XXII General Chapter of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians then, recognizes that it is the love of God which urges us on: The Upper Room where the apostles were together is not a place for them to stay but one from which to launch out… love leads to exodus and to a going out of oneself towards new frontiers to make a gift of oneself: love grows through love…”

It should be recognized that young people are interested in God. All research confirms this. A high percentage says that they feel the need for God and that they are convinced of his existence.

The RM shows us how Don Rua was a faithful disciple. He was the most faithful, therefore the most humble and at the same time the most valiant of the sons of Don Bosco. Paul the VI decided the new Blessed with words which identified his fundamental characteristic: fidelity. The successor of Don Bosco is a son, disciple, imitator…

Michael came to DB because he had no wine. He came because he wanted to see JC. It had all started long before with a strange gesture. Eight years of age and having lost his father, with a broad black band fixed to his jacket by his mother he had stretched out his hand for a medal form Don Bosco. But instead of a medal Don Bosco had given him his left hand while making a sign as though cutting it in half. And he said to him, “Take it, little Michael, take it.” And before those wide open eyes gazed on him transfixed, he said six words which were to be the secret of his life: “We two will always go halves.”

More than one Cardinal in Rome, at the death of Don Bosco, was convinced that the Salesian Congregation would quickly disintegrate; Don Rua was 50 years of age. It would be best to send a pontifical Commissioner to Turin to arrange the union of the Salesians with another Congregation of proven tradition. But Bishop Cagliero called together the Chapter with some of the older ones and a letter to the Holy Father was drawn up in which all the Superiors, and the older confreres declared that in total agreement they would accept Don Rua as Superior, and not only would they submit to him, but would receive him with great joy… on 11 February the Holy Father confirmed and declared Don Rua n office for 12 years according to the Constitutions.

Pope Leo XIII had met Don Rua and knew that under his direction the Salesian would continue their mission. And so it was. The Salesians and Salesian houses multiplied. Don Bosco had founded 64 houses; don Rua took the number to 341. At the death of don Bosco the Salesian were 700; with Don Rua, in 22 years as the Superior General, they became 4000. The Salesian missions, which Don Bosco, had tenaciously begun, and during his lifetime had spread to Pantagonia and Tiera del Fuego, Uruguay and Brazil; Don Rua multiplied the missionary outreach and Salesian missionaries arrived in Columbia, Ecuador, Mexico, China, India, Egypt and Mozambique. He was also aware that peoples wanted to see JC. He was aware that the wine had run out in these places.

On order that fidelity to Don Bosco might not diminish, Don Rua travelled far and wide. His whole life was studded with journeys. He went to his Salesians wherever possible. Reading through even only rapidly the impressive number of Don Rua’s letters, or his circular letters, the volumes which describe his work as the Successor of Don Bosco for 22 years, one discovers in an impressive manner that what the Pope said is true: his fidelity to Don Bosco is not static but dynamic. He was really aware of the changing times and of the needs of the young, and fearlessly opened up Salesian work to new fields of pastoral ministry.

The strenna calls us to present Jesus to youngsters. God has given us gifts and talents and we must make use of them in order to make the community grow and develop. A life of witness is the most powerful medium of communication. Like Don Rua let us be faithful disciples, always dynamic, transforming water into wine.

LONAVLA, NOVEMBER 30, 2009: The Cooperators of the Don Bosco, Lonavla Unit had a unique gathering on the evening of November 28, 2009 to commemorate the 150th year of the congregation.

The programme began with the Eucharistic Celebration presided over by Fr. Thomas D’Costa, the Delegate of the Cooperators. In his homily he spoke of the origin of the Cooperators started by Don Bosco and their needs. Later the aspirants along with the Fathers and Brothers organized Fete Games for the Cooperators and their families. The day ended with a fellowship meal. The programme was fruitful as many members of the families expressed their intention to join the Cooperators unit.

PUNE, NOVEMBER 19, 2009: The second seminar on the Common Identity Card and Common Mission Statement of the Salesian family was held at Don Bosco Youth Centre, Koregaon Park, Pune on November 15, 2009 for the benefit of the members of Salesian Family of Madhya Maharashtra. 65 members of the Salesian Family attended the meeting.

Mrs. Rosy Fernandes welcomed the gathering. Fr. Elias Dias lit the lamp and conducted the prayer service. He then explained the concept of Salesian family. He said that if you really want to know the meaning of Salesian family you have to study the two documents: Common Identity Card and Common Mission of the Salesian family.

Fr. Valerian Pereira spoke in Hindi on Common Identity Card. He highlighted that the grace of communion in the Salesian family is founded on the belief that through the initiative of God and the maternal assistance of the Blessed Mother Don Bosco gave rise to an original, evangelical experience. He spelt out the characteristics traits of the Salesian spirit and what was necessary for the formation of an active fraternity. He urged all to be proud and enthused by the charismatic identity of their own family and called for collaborative ventures in order to reach out to the young in the spirit of Don Bosco.

The document Common Mission Statement of the Salesian family was dealt upon by Fr. Wilfred D’souza. He explained all the articles of the document and focused on the various aspects of the Common Mission. Fr. Bento D’souza displayed a 10 minutes movie on Community Radio. He explained to the members the meaning of it and have its venture in their neighbourhood. The provincial coordinator Mrs. Claudina Pinto put forward the resolution of Chennai Congress of the Co-operators. She told them in order to return to Don Bosco we must know more about Don Bosco. Fr. Elias Dias presided over the con celebrated mass. Mr. Isudas Parmar, from Gujarat proposed the vote of thanks. He thanked the organizers, speakers and the host unit of the Co-operators for their fine hospitality.

SHILLONG, NOVEMBER 17, 2009: The National Federation Council meeting of the Don Bosco Alumni, India was held at Bakdil Training Centre, Tura, Meghalaya- Assam from November 9-11, 2009. Mr. Edward Pinto, Mr. Kailash Parekh, Mr. Ketan Gala and Fr. Elias Dias from Mumbai province attended the meeting.

This year the Archdiocese of Shillong is celebrating its platinum jubilee. On this occasion Rector Major Pascoal Chavez visited Guwahati province. Addressing the National Federation Council of the Alumni he said that there are four types of Past Pupils. He explained that it was not on the social, religious, cultural, educational basis. In fact not all the past pupils are on the same level. The first group is those who consider being a past pupil just be default. It happened by chance. For them it is just a memory, nothing more. The second group is those who consider their passing through a Salesian institution a blessing. They consider the Salesian education they received as a moment in which they learnt to be grateful and feel affection towards Don Bosco. The third group is those who consider it not only a blessing but consider being a past pupil a commitment. Hence they feel the need to re- associate themselves with the Salesians. They are willing to commit themselves to this way of life in their social life and they are ready to be present in politics and ready to work for the welfare of all. The fourth group of the past pupils is those who consider a life lived in Don Bosco’s way is a project of life in their family, society, politics and media. Rector major encouraged the past pupils to give the best to those who receive the least.

The inaugural ceremony was held in Don Bosco school complex in Tura. The Provincial delegate of Guwahati Fr. Januarius Sangma welcomed the guests and wished them a pleasant stay in Tura. Fr. K.J. Louis, the national delegate of the past pupil, in his speech said, “The past pupil should fill the whole world with Don Bosco. The chief guest P. A. Sangma, MLA of Tura and an ex- student of Don Bosco welcomed the gathering and said that Don Bosco like Mahatma Gandhi is not a past reality but a reality of the future and the past pupils must work on this.

The first session, the minutes and accounts of the last years meeting were read and passed. Fr. K. J. Louis dealt with world statutes and found some discrepancies’ in its formulation. So the assembly asked him to write a letter and clarify the points. 2011 is the centenary of the Past Pupil Association. In this connection they discussed the world congress in Rome in October and the National Congress in the month of December 2011.

The Council visited Nokrek Biospehere Reserve, Horti Hub Rongram and Fr. George Stadler memorial school, Darenggiri and financed by the past pupil of Tura. The closing ceremony was held at Don Bosco School, Tura. The local beat group entertained the guests. Mr. Edward Pinto proposed the vote of thanks.

ANNUAL RETREAT OF SALESIAN COOPERATORS

MUMBAI, OCTOBER 23, 2009: The annual retreat of the Salesian cooperators of Don Bosco Mumbai was held at Vinalaya, Andheri on October 19-20, 2009.

Fr. Isaac Arackaparambil sdb, Director of Amrut Dhara, Gujarat animated the retreat. The retreat began with a welcome address by Fr. Elias Dias, Salesian family delegate of Mumbai province. He welcomed all the cooperators and Fr. Isaac. He especially thanked Fr. Isaac for his availability in spite of the sad demise of his dad last week.

The theme of the retreat was ‘The Discipleship of Our Lady’. The catholic laity faces a lot of flack from other Christian denominations for the importance they give to Our Lady in their prayers and devotion. With a view of affirming their affection for our Blessed Mother and to put to rest their apprehension created by the assaults posed by anti Marian protagonists, Fr. Isaac chose this topic. He based his talks on the book “Quiet Places with Mary” by Rev. Isaias Powers. The purpose was to help the cooperator to develop their relationship with Mary as a model and a partner in their prayer life. The themes portrayed Mary involved in similar situations that cause contemporary Christians pain and stress. Mary’s imaged responses help today’s adult to discover peaceful solutions to heal those in pain and provide practical approaches and ease their stress. Applying the insights of Fr. Powers, Fr. Isaac engaged the retreat- ants in linking their experiences with those of the mother of God in simple, yet practical ways by providing Gospel words and settings to our daily problems, frustrations and hopes. It is consoling to realize quietly that Mary faced the same round of questions. It is strengthening when our questions turn into quiet moments of prayer in the presence of Jesus.

The retreat concluded with the Vote of thanks proposed by Claudina Pinto, Provincial Coordinator. She thanked the preacher for his excellent and practical insights that he shared with the group. She also thanked Fr. Elias for organizing the retreat. It was a very rich experience for the cooperators to know so much more about our Blessed Mother.

LAUNCH OF ADMA IN MUMBAI

MUMBAI, SEPTEMBER 9, 2009: THE ASSOCIATION OF MARY HELP OF CHRISTIANS (ADMA) was launched on Tuesday, September 8, 2009, at the A.V Hall at the Provincial House, Matunga. The feast day of the Nativity of our Blessed Mother was chosen for this first gathering. The meeting was led by Fr. Wilfred D’souza and Fr. Elias Dias.
Fr. Wilfred in his opening address welcomed the participants and said that as members of ADMA they now become a part of the Salesian Family. The meeting planned to focus mainly on two aspects: what ADMA entails as an association and a look at the Marian feasts in the month of September.
Fr. Elias, the Provincial Delegate of the Salesian Family taking the podium mentioned that starting off ADMA in Mumbai was his dream. “Devotion to Mary Help of Christians and to the Blessed Sacrament is a gift. If we do not make use of these gifts it is useless,” he added. He also made a mention of the up coming programs for the month of October and November for the Salesian Family.
For the benefit of the members Fr. Wilfred explained the origin of the Association and what the Association aims at. Very briefly he explained the nature, goals and the commitments of ADMA. In the second half of the meeting Fr. Wilfred discussed the various Marian feasts in the month of September. The enthusiastic house came up with various suggestions of carrying out the membership of the Association on a day to day basis. Similarly, a very brief sharing and question and answer session got the members involved. The 23 members who attended the first meeting have set the sails going for the ADMA in Mumbai.
The association will meet on the first Saturday of every month at 5.30pm.

FAMILY PRAYS TOGETHER TO STAY TOGETHER

MUMBAI, SEPTEMBER 08, 2009: The Salesian Family of the Mumbai Province celebrated a day of recollection at Auxilium, Pali Hill, Bandra-Mumbai on Sunday, September 6, 2009. At a day dedicated to the theme “My Commitment Today” the Family members gathered in large number, 97 to be precise - to pray, reflect, commit and renew their vocation. They came, they stayed and they went back rejuvenated.

The day began with ‘nashta’ and thereafter proceeded to heavier things as Sr. Teresa Joseph, a renowned speaker, writer and animator-trainer addressed the members with an inspiring power-point programme. She had the members glued to every word she uttered on Don Bosco’s Charism, the joy of belonging to the Salesian family, the Rector Major as the centre of the unity, pastoral charity, Da Mihi Animas, and the key elements of the Preventive System. She said “we are all called to work for the common mission… making the gift of our Charism to the Church and to society and by asking ourselves: What is Don Bosco asking me to do today?”

Later Sr. Phyllis with great experience and acumen expressed her views on what the word “commitment” entailed for us all. In a talk peppered with apt humour and genuine reflection she expounded in a very lucid manner the importance of commitment and what it means to us today, as members of the Salesian Family.

The family then celebrated a well-animated Eucharist, presided over by Fr. Christopher. Speaking during the homily, Fr Christopher dwelt on the Salesian Family as a Movement and drew examples from ordinary life to explain how ours is a movement with a difference. He stressed: “in order to commit ourselves to the mission and dream of Don Bosco we need to know ourselves better, form ourselves together and then work together in peace and harmony.”

Fr. Elias Dias, the Provincial Delegate of the Salesian Family thanked the FMA Sisters of Pali Hill for hosting and animating this recollection pilgrimage, Fr. Christopher for celebrating the Holy Eucharist and his homily and all the members of the Salesian Family present for the occasion, for their love and sacrifice.

After lunch all the members of the Salesian Family walked to Mont Mary’s Basilica singing hymns and reciting the Holy Rosary. In the Basilica they held a short prayer service and then dispersed back to their own hearths with a heart filled with Don Bosco and our Blessed Mother!

FAMILY’S DAY OUT… A MOVEMENT FORWARD

MUMBAI, AUGUST 17, 2009: Boscowadi at Uttan-Gorai was converted into a hotspot on Sunday, August 16, 2009 as a 90-strong contingent of the Salesian Family descended on the quiet little camp house to celebrate their first-of-a-kind picnic, commemorating the Birth Anniversary of Don Bosco. It was a spirited potpourri of Co-operators, Past-Pupils, Volunteers, FMAs and Salesians, in varied hues, shapes, ages and from different walks of life, including Fr Michael Fernandes, the Salesian Provincial of Mumbai.

Hitting the tarmac simultaneously, from Matunga and Andheri at 7:00 a.m. and filling up as the journey progressed, the huge buses wound their way into the hinterland of the Mumbai outskirts amidst oohs and aahs, meandering along the refreshingly green and cool foliage before coming to a halt at the intended hotspot. Breakfast was the starting fare, followed by the Eucharistic Meal presided over by Fr Michael Fernandes. Celebrating the occasion, Fr Michael invited the picnickers to become “bread for our brothers and sisters in imitation our Saviour and model Jesus Christ, the bread of life.”

It was then a dash to the roaring sea, which however wasn’t too inviting thanks to the litter and the oil slick… but the enterprising picnickers continued with their fun, frolicking and collecting shells along the shore. It was singing, chatting, mingling around with “old and newer siblings”… a quintessentially picnicky feeling with crooning away, belting out of golden oldies, spontaneous dances, choruses, games, regaling each other with the memories of the ‘good old days’ and a general familial ambient both indoors and out on the refreshingly spirited waterfront.

The mood of the day was a passionate mixture of nostalgia, recollectedness, friendly banter, flirty swings and even enterprisingly futuristic planning. The sumptuous platter served up in the noon, only added to the camaraderie. Later in the evening, the ‘Housie’ with animated gusto and punching of numbers gave the siblings an opportunity to engage in a cheerful duel, culminating in the munching of biscuits and sipping of the ever tasty chai. Others of a more pious and divine orientation walked up the stairs to the Shrine atop Bhatte-Bundar, for a darshan. Some others who couldn’t resist the temptation to stay away from the inviting waves of the sea darted down the beach and in to the ‘not-so-clean’ waters anyway, just to get the thrill-feel. Just a little before sun-down the festival party clambered into the house-on-wheels, heading back to husband, wife, children grandchildren and the daily routine of life.

It was a coup of sorts with the entire Family coming together for this venture of togetherness and party-time. It was even more appropriate that this was on the Birth Anniversary of our Father and Founder. Some of the members opined “It is so nice … I feel at home… It would be nice to meet up more often like this… Wow… this is great… Thanks to Fr Elias….” etc, etc, etc. The Salesian Confreres of Don Bosco Matunga, Dominic Savio Andheri and Bosco Boys were specially thanked, appreciated and prayed for, for having made this adventure possible. Perhaps the only dampener was… the scorching heat with water, water everywhere, not a drop that fell… and yet the family’s day was made…!!

First VDB Aspirants for the Mumbai Province

In a simple yet touching ceremony of Prayer and reflection, two youngsters were initiated to the VDB movement by Fr. Michael Fernandes, Provincial on May 30, 2009. Also present for the ceremony was Fr Wilfred D’souza. It was truly a historic day for the VDB Presence in Mumbai. Through a power point presentation Fr. Michael explained their identity, secularity, consecration and Saleisianity. There are so many ways of being “Salesian”, myriad ways of being inspired by the example of Don Bosco. We see how two people are looking for an alternative way of following a “vocation”. The words used can be confusing.

A “Volunteer of Don Bosco” (VDB) is a permanent commitment not to be confused with the many young people who generously work as Salesian volunteers before they begin their careers in life. The Volunteers of Don Bosco is a Secular Institute for women. It was founded in Turin in 1917 by the young women who attended the Salesian Sisters Oratory at Valdocco. Today, there are approximately 1,500 women who are members of the Volunteers of Don Bosco. In India we have only 9 VDB’s. They live the vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, but, unlike members of a religious institute, live out their consecration in the world. They do not live in a community and do not wear any indentifying clothing or insignia. They live out their Salesian vocation within the context of daily life and undertake professional activities according to their interests, abilities and training. It is their vocation and mission to bring the message of Jesus to whatever work or life context they encounter. They work in offices, factories, schools, hospitals and many other work places.

DON BOSCO PAST PUPILS LOOKING AHEAD

MUMBAI, JULY 21, 2009: The Annual General Meeting of the Mumbai Provincial Federation of Don Bosco Past Pupils was held at Audio Visual Hall of the Provincial House on July 19, 2009, at 6.30 pm. The meeting began with a prayer service conducted by Don Bosco – Kurla Unit, comprising of a bhajan, the past pupils prayer and a soothing audio visual song- Make us an instrument of peace.
Thereafter the Chief Guest, Vice Provincial - Rev Fr. Ajoy Fernandes, Past Pupils Provincial Delegate- Fr. Elias Dias, Fr. Wilfred D’souza and Sr. Santanna were welcomed with floral tributes.
The secretary of the Mumbai Provincial Federation, Mr. Kailash Parekh read the annual report which spelt out the various activities undertaken by the Mumbai Federation during the period April 2008- July 2009. The Annual reports of each unit were read by the individual unit secretaries in detail.
Sister Santanna in her address informed the members that this year was dedicated to the Salesian Family. Requesting the past pupils to spread the Salesian ways of Cheerfulness and Honesty, she called for a closer working environment between the SDB and the FMA past pupils, where common activities could be undertaken. She thanked the Past pupils for inviting the FMA for the AGM and in turn invited the past pupils for THE FMA’s AGM to be held at Panjim- Goa on August 31, 2009. The Treasurer, Mr. Joseph, read the statement of accounts of Mumbai Provincial Federation for the period of April 1, 2008 to March 31, 2009. The Chief Guest Rev Fr. Ajoy commended the past pupils for the various activities undertaken by them. He summarized the contents of the reports of the various units as under:
a) The past pupils reflected tremendous love for Don Bosco.
b) A systematic connection of the association from unit, to province, to national to international levels.
c) The feeling of joy to be with each other.
d) Believing in the growth of individuals and the unit through retreats, recollections and leadership camps.
e) Out reach programmes organized within the school and the world outside.
f) Different levels in the units, the seniors, the juniors and the fresher have yet to be connected.
g) Organizing capabilities of the various units, be it sports or academic competitions.
The Provincial delegate, Fr. Elias Dias in his concluding address informed the members of the forth coming events to be undertaken by the Provincial Federation and requested a healthy participation from all the units. He praised the past pupils for the activities undertaken but also mentioned that the work done was going unnoticed. He therefore requested all the units to put up their activities on BIS or SALFAM. This would in turn help to enlighten many people who are not aware of the past pupils movement and their involvement in promoting the Salesian spirit. Fr. Elias also brought out the issue of publishing a directory of the past pupils in the SALFAM issue of January. He thanked the president Mr. Ketan Gala for his support in rejuvenating the federation. He also appreciated the work done by Mr. Joseph, who worked behind the scenes as the treasurer. He also thanked Mr. Amar and Mr. Dilip Bhatt for their contribution for a smooth running at the province level.
Finally the president concluded the meeting by proposing the Vote of Thanks. Mr. Ketan extended his sincere gratitude to the Vice Provincial, the Provincial Delegate Fr. Elias, Fr. Wilfred, Sr. Santanna , all the office bearers and all the members especially to the two members from Nashik who were present for the AGM. The meeting saw an attendance of 43 members. All the members departed after a sumptuous dinner.

When Don Bosco was just a mere lad he was shown in a prophetic dream what his life’s mission would be. A ‘beautiful woman bedecked with stars’ put her hand on his shoulder and stretching out the other said, “Look, this is your field of work”. It was a huge ‘field of work’ and right from the beginning Don Bosco understood that it was not a task he would be able to fulfill alone – the task of turning street urchins into good citizens.

Don Bosco was ordained a priest on June 5, 1841, and in the same year on December 8, he began his work. As years rolled by, thousands of boys flocked to him. To take care of them he looked for helpers and collaborators. He gathered all types of people: rich and poor, young and old, married and unmarried, interns and externs. He called them Salesians. In 1859, he founded the Salesian Congregation to look after these poor boys. In 1874, the Constitution of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians was approved and they worked for the girls under the leadership of Mary Domenica Mazarello. In 1876, he set up a pious union of Salesian Co-operators, a lay association to collaborate with him in his mission. Thus we see in the life of Don Bosco that he gathered religious men, women and lay people to fulfill his mission.

Today Salesian Family refers to an assembly of groups, institutes and association that share Don Boscos charism, spirituality and mission towards the young. These units were either founded directly by Don Bosco or developed after his death by his followers. These groups strive to better the social world like Don Bosco who was concerned with the temporal and spiritual salvation of the youth and the working classes. These groups are means to fulfill the mission of Don Bosco. Today there are 27 groups the world over under the umbrella of the Salesian Family.

The Salesians came to Mumbai in 1928 under the leadership of Fr. Joseph Hauber. On January 31, 1972 Mumbai was officially erected as a Province after the separation of Konkan Province. Mumbai province comprises of states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. There are 6 branches of Salesian Family working in the province of Mumbai. There are 205 Salesians of Don Bosco working in 26 Presences. 201 Daughters of Mary Help of Christians working in 32 houses. 7 SMI Sisters working in 2 Presences. The association of the Salesian Cooperators that started in 1974 have 16 centers and 154 active members. The Provincial Federation of the Past Pupils of Don Bosco which was established in 1968 under the leadership of Fr. Alfred Mariotta has 1636 life members in 9 centers. The Past Pupils of Daughters of Mary Help of Christians are enthusiastic about their membership in the Salesian Family. There are 2 Volunteers of Don Bosco who are under formation. 3 brothers ‘The Disciples’ founded by Fr. Joe D’souza working in our institute in Gujarat.

In the past we worked separately for the Cooperators and the past pupils except on the occasion of the Salesian Family day. On this day we have Holy Eucharist, variety entertainment and fellowship dinner in common.

The Co-operators have their AGM, pilgrimage at Mount Mary, Bandra in the month of September, annual retreat, outreach programs to any destitute home and Lenten recollection in the month of April. During summer vacation sometimes picnics are organized. This April they attended the South Asian Congress of the Salesian Co-operators in Chennai.

The Provincial Federation of the Past Pupils of Don Bosco had an animation programme at a provincial level. They had their AGM during which elections were held. A leadership seminar organized by them at Kurla and ‘A day with God’ held at Andheri on March 22, 2009. In the month of December, 2008 the past pupils attended 9th Asia-Australia Congress held in Philippines.

This year being the year of the Salesian Family the Salesian Commission is at its large. It has got 11 members representing all the branches working in the province of Mumbai. Special Salesian Family meeting held on March 15, 2009 decided to have some common venture for the Salesian Family. They decided to have two days seminar on identity and common mission on Salesian Family on July 4 and 5 in 2009 and repeat it again in the month of November for the benefit of others who did not take part in the first meet. Aug 9 is scheduled as a picnic day for the entire Salesian Family. It will be organized by the past pupils. The month of September, recollection cum walking pilgrimage of all Salesian familia will be held in Bandra. On December 18 the whole Salesian Family of Mumbai province will renew their vows or promises. On January 17, 2010 the Salesian Family day will be celebrated at Kurla. Besides all these programs each branch will have their own programs at their own centers.

Today the Salesian Family is considered a vast movement that works with Don Bosco in his mission. It must grow numerically and spiritually. It must grow numerically because of the vast field of apostolate in need of collaborators. It must grow spiritually because Don Bosco has started his family for the salvation of souls. No one can give unless one has it. The members of the family should have spiritual life in order to spiritualize the world. Therefore, the spiritual programs and animation programs are very necessary in the Salesian Family. We must make an effort to grow – to revive the dormant units and start new units in all our institutions. Each branch of the Salesian Family has a responsibility to help the others to increase and grow. We have to increase the number of the Cooperators, past pupils, volunteers of Don Bosco and start a new branch of Salesian Family ADMA- devout clients for Mary Help of Christians. It is a branch which Don Bosco himself started at the completion of his Basilica of Mary Help of Christians in Turin in 1868. We have ample opportunities and facilities to launch this project in our province. What we need is a bit of good will and enthusiasm in the movement.

The Salesian Family is a vibrant reality. To keep it alive we the Salesian Family has to change our mentality. We need to shift our emphasis for excessive autonomy to synergy of a vast movement of persons. We need to underline not the autonomy of the individual groups but the synergy of the whole family. We have to stress on the culture of communion rather than individualism. This change of mentality must start with Salesians.

NASHIK, JULY 16, 2009: The Past Pupils of Don Bosco, Nashik under the guidance of Rev. Fr. Diego Nunes organized an inter house GK quiz on July 8, 2009. Consisting of two groups namely std V – VII and Std VIII – X, the quiz in all had nine rounds on the fields of Literature, Sports, Politics, History, Bollywood, Mathematics, Spellings etc., ensuring all round knowledge of the young participants. In the junior section, Savio House won the quiz and the in senior section it was the Bosco House which took the honors. The chief guest Mr. Ketan Gala, Provincial President of Don Bosco Alumni in his address said education is imparted not only in classrooms but also by such activities. He congratulated the Past Pupils and the Principal Fr. Diego Nunes for organizing this programme and reviving the Past Pupils Unit. The guest of honor Mr. Remeth Fernandes, President of the Andheri Unit also commended the efforts of the Past Pupils. The prizes were given by the Rector Fr. Ivo Coelho. The event was followed by a meeting of the Past Pupils and the Provincial President , wherein they were guided as how to become life members of the federation and how to ensure further growth of their Unit.

Chris Valentino sdb MUMBAI, JULY 6, 2007: It was one big gathering of enthused family members at Don Bosco Provincial House, Mumbai, when eighty-seven people belonging to the Salesian Family assembled for the “Seminar on Common Identity Card and Common Mission Statement of the Salesian Family.” The gathering had representatives from the Salesians, Daughters of Mary Help of Christians, Salesian Co-operators, Past Pupils, Volunteers of Don Bosco and Sisters of Mary Immaculate along with their unit delegates.The seminar commenced with an audio-visual prayer moment animated by the very resourceful Fr. Glenn Lowe. This was followed by the official welcome to all the participants by Fr. Michael Fernandes, Provincial of the Mumbai Province. In his address Fr. Michael said, “All of us belong to one family… this is our family… hence we must feel open and welcome to come together, work together for the development of the society, especially the welfare of youngsters.” He invited the participants to a day of fruitful and reflective workshop on the need to think, act and be one family as Don Bosco envisioned his society to be.Fr. Elias Diaz then presented the historical perspective of the development of the Salesian Family from its inception by Don Bosco till date, with a well developed Power Point show.The first part of the seminar, “Common Identity Card of the Salesian Family’ was then spelt out with great lucidity and vivacity by Fr. Valerian Pereira, Professor of Salesianity at Divyadaan, Salesian Institute of Philosophy, Nashik. In his exposition Fr. Valerian said, “Don Bosco’s vision and life were shaped by the initial experiences he had as a youngster… he later wished to be a friend and father to the poor and the deprived… and thus began a movement of persons who would be his collaborators in his expedition to create good and honest, upright citizens. We all belong to this family of Don Bosco, drawing inspiration from him, and this is what he gives us our common identity…”The afternoon session was geared to the part of the seminar; ‘Common Mission Statement of the Salesian Family’ dwelt upon by Fr. Wifred D’Souza. He focused on the various aspects of the mission entrusted to the Salesian Family as a unit. He explained all the articles of the document.It was one big memorable family affair with great camaraderie, joviality and enthusiasm as the members interacted with each other and partook of the delicious goodies laid out at table. The Delegate for the Salesian Family, Fr. Elias Diaz, remarked with great joy… “I didn’t expect so many to turn up… they have overshot my estimation by over thirty-five…” He thanked Fr. Provincial for his encouragement and enthusiasm, the Provincial House community and especially Fr. Bernard their hospitality. He also thanked the speakers and all the member of the Salesian Family for their participation despite the heavy rains.

AGM OF SALESIAN COOPERATORS

Claudina Pinto MUMBAI, JUNE 29, 2009: The Annual General Body Meeting of the Salesian Cooperators of the Mumbai Province was held on June 28, 2009 in the AV hall at the Provincial House, Mumbai.

53 Cooperators from all over Mumbai were present for the same. The meeting started with a con-celebrated mass. The main celebrant was Reverend Fr. Provincial Michael Fernandes. In his homily he spoke on laity and their rightful place and functions in the church. He mentioned that there are two states in the church: Clerical state and Lay state. Further he explained these states. They have fundamental equality but functional inequality. We can see in the church as Pyramidical Structure or Collaborative Structure. In the Collaborative Structure there is lot of scope for the Laity in the Church. He encouraged the co operators to collaborate in the activities of the church.

After the mass Fr. Eliaz Dias in his power point presentation explained the identity of the cooperators, their history and the different activities of the co operatives in the province of Mumbai.

Minutes of the previous AGM and the activities of the co operators were read out by Mrs. Philomena Mendes. Mr. Christopher Gomes read out the statement of accounts for the year 2008-09. With some clarifications the accounts were passed.

Fr. Eliaz Dias appraised the co operators about the forth coming activities in the province which would include seminars, recollections, picnics, retreats, out reach programmes and joint meetings of the Salesian Family. He invited the co operators to take active part in the programmes organized for the Salesian Family this year.

Mrs. Claudina Pinto proposed the Vote of Thanks. She thanked Fr. Provincial for celebrating mass, Fr. Dias and Sr. Phyllis Fernandes fma, for their encouragement and all the co operators for their presence. The meeting ended at 7. 30 p.m.

Dear Members of the Salesian Family,
There was an advertisement in the newspaper inviting people forthe post of Assistant Manager in a firm. Many applied but in thefinal interview only four were chosen. The Manager gave them atest to transfer boxes from one room to another. The first one cameand said he had applied for the post of Assistant Manager and notto transfer boxes, so he left the job. The second one tried his bestbut he could not finish the work. The third one hired people but theyalso did not finish the work. Finally, the fourth one asked theManager to give him help. “What help do you need?” asked theManager. He said, “I need 50 men to work on this job”. TheManager gave him 50 men and he finished the job and he wasselected for the post of Assistant Manager.Johnny Bosco at the age of 9 had a dream which made a deep impression on his life. He saw aplayground full of street children. They were fighting, swearing and using abusive language. Amajestic person told him to put order. “But how can I?”, asked Johnny. “I am a poor boy ofBecchi. I need help”. The majestic person gave him his own mother. Our Blessed Mother puther hand on his shoulder and taught him how to go about his mission.In 1841, Don Bosco began his work in a little chapel of St. Francis of Assisi at ConvittoEcclesiastico. By 1865 he had all types of people helping him in his mission. Some wereinterns and some externs. He called them his family.What is a Salesian Family? Salesian Family refers to an Assembly of Groups, Institutions andAssociations that share Don Bosco's charism, spirituality and mission towards the young.These units were either founded directly by Don Bosco or developed after his death. Thesegroups strive to better the social world like Don Bosco who was concerned with the temporaland spiritual salvation of humanity especially its youth and working classes. These groupsmake a closely knit vast movement in the society. They have common identity card andcommon mission statement.Salfam is a link that unites all the members of the Salesian Family. The purpose of thispublication is to create a fresh communication, to foster a wider knowledge of the variousbranches of the Salesian Family and thus to enthuse apostolic involvement and collaborationin the Salesian mission. It brings to us relevant Salesian events; confront us with heroic boldSalesian ventures in the Salesian Family of the Bombay Province to work together towardsbuilding the new kingdom proclaimed by Jesus Christ.

Dear Members of the Salesian Family,
The Salfam magazine is back in your hands! Congrats to Fr. Elias Diaz and his team of helpers. At one of our meetings a collective decision was taken to revive it. It is a need to know
more about each other and the happenings in each unit. Now it is your duty to keep the magazine going with contributions by way of articles and news items. This year we are also revamping the Salesian Family office at the provincial house. I have assigned Fr. Wilfred D'Souza to assist Fr. Diaz. The Salesian Family Council has been enlarged and they are going to give us more direction in our works. They have planned some common meetings and activities. So it is going to be fun meeting, learning and working together. I am also happy to note that there is growth in some of the units. There are new members and younger ones too. Kudos to those who have worked towards this growth. Two young ladies have come forward and want to be enrolled as Volunteers of Don Bosco. So this is another branch of our family, which we have not had in our province so far. I am happy to welcome them to the Salesian Family. Many of our units and family members are doing a lot of good work. But most of these are not known to the others. At times we work in our own units or settings and do not have a common project to sponsor. Hence this year we have taken Project Karjat. We are starting a new institution for Street Kids and will need a number of household items. The Fathers from Karjat will prepare a list and accordingly you can make contributions from your units for this project. I wish you the very best in this year and let us keep the Salesian Family flag flying high always. Let us learn from each other, support one another, work together and grow together into one big Salesian family.
